When player is in spectator mode, the game crashes approximately 3.5 minutes after. Player does not need to move for the game to crash.
Create New World and enable cheats
Use /gamemode spectator command
Wait and it will crash.
It doesn’t seem like it will crash if the player in spectator is moving, but being AFK spectator helps entities not kill you when you need to step away but keep a farm running.
