When creating copper golem sideways always reverts to unoxidized copper version

When making a copper golem you can place the carved pumpkin on top of the copper block and depending on which copper block you use depends what type of copper golem, and chest you get, but if you place the craved pumpkin next to not on top of it you will always get a regular(unoxidized) copper golem and copper chest.
