Untrimmed armor appears trimmed in your inventory and in chests if a trimmed armor piece has previously been in that slot.

To reproduce easily, place an untrimmed armor piece in a chest. Then, selecting a trimmed armor piece, replace the untrimmed armor, then switch again. the untrimmed armor will appear trimmed with the same material as the trimmed armor.
