Editor Mode will always place half slabs on the bottom of a block if placed via Smart Fill, even if original block was attached via the top of a block. I think it would be more smart if the original block state of the source block such as stair orientation or half slab placement orientation was preserved from source block to intended replacement block.

Yeah, still the same on 26.10, and same as stairs : they will always be on the same direction, even if it’s not the first direction before using /fill.
