Broken Fishing Rod Does Not Disappear When Hooking Entites with Rod

When fishing as normal, and my fishing rod breaks, the fishing rod disappears from my inventory. However, when hooking entities, such as pigs and cows, if the rod breaks, it does not disappear from my inventory and creates a “ghost” fishing rod. I can’t move this ghost fishing rod around my inventory, and if I try to use it, it simply disappears. If you drop it, it also disappears. Is this a bug? It can’t be a feature.
