Panes keep turning into crossed panes.

I put some glass panes in my windows, sort of standard windows. But then whenever I walk past them, they alternatingly turn into 4-way panes as if there’d been two blocks in front of and behind them. It always seems to be the panes either side of the crosshair at that, not even the one in front of the crosshair.
