Game crashes or disconnects when joining a friend’s world

Whenever I try to join my friend’s world, the game loads for a few seconds and then crashes or kicks me out to the main menu. The same thing happens when my friend tries to join my world — they get disconnected instantly.

We both have stable internet and the latest version of Minecraft installed. We tried restarting the game, our devices, and Wi-Fi, but the problem keeps happening.
