Update will not complete even though the update size is 0.0, preventing the game from starting.

Upon starting Minecraft, I am presented with an update screen that does not complete and indicates “Error” after a lengthy time. Restarting the computer does not change the result. It doesn’t matter if the game is started from within the Minecraft Launcher or with a desktop icon double click. The Microsoft Store update status indicator is stuck on “Checking dependencies” when I look to update that way. The update process has stalled for some reason and will not allow gameplay.
