Grass takes a very long time to grow back or it wont grow back at all

In my minecraft world, the sheep that are on land have eaten most of the grass and even if they are near my house the grass that is eaten never does seem to grow back. If i place dirt it also does not seem to grow in to grass. Please help, i am running out of grass in my world and it is starting to look like hell in indev minecraft.
