Cartographer game freeze

A villager switching to a cartographer causes the game to freeze. As soon as I place a cartography table down next to a villager and the green sparkles appear, the game will freeze. There’s still sound and I can still move, but I can't break and collect blocks, nor interact with villagers or other mobs. I also can't bring up the game menu and save and exit, so I have to force the application to close from the xbox menu.
