Certain recipes do not register when crafting

When I open either the 2x2 or 3x3 crafting table, certain recipes do not register with certain items. For example, I opened up a 3x3 crafting table to create a chest with 8 pieces of wood in my inventory, and instead of the full array of recipes, only 5 or 6 recipes are shown, with the chest not being one of them. This also affects creative mode, with none of the creative inventory items being shown at all, and no recipes being shown in the survival style crafting table (in creative). Please help.
