Not saving custom skins when reopening the game

I had just downloaded Minecraft and I found a website to get a custom skin, put the custom skin into the game and existed as I had things I needed to do. Once I reloaded the game later that day, my skin was gone, however the png. File was still there. It kept happening and I eventually gave up on trying to make it stay.
