The new update renders furnace useless.

I updated Minecraft PE today and I began to play. I realized first that a bunch of the names of the items were distorted and looked like code. That, I could handle. But when I tried to use the furnace feature, I was unable to touch either the ore I produced before the update or the lower square where I could add fuel to the furnace. Basically, the furnace became useless.
