When I was making my Enderman farm, I finally spawned in an Endermite, used way too many pearls. Once I got it into a Minecart, it instantly began to suffocate and died. The cart was not lying on a rail on my survival world. This is a new issue only slightly related to previous endermite deaths on previous versions.
