I can’t open Minecraft bedrock edition 1.5.3

Same experience on Android.  Can't open the app at all.  The game previously worked, and now it just shows the Minecraft splash screen and then exits, without any changes to the system or the app.  Tried clearing out cache and rebooting the phone, and there's about 34GB of storage available.
