I spawned in an NPC using a command, later, I tried to kill it, it can't be hit. I put some lava on where it was standing. It didn't die.

Npc's are unkillable. This is most likely a feature which was meant to be. The only problem is that you cant use /kill on it. Also the NPC was not finished anyway.
