Furnace problem

I was playing survival, expecting to make some glass by using a furnace, when I figured out you can't select the bottom box to put a burning material in. I am just clicking on the box to place the coal but the box won't select and I can't make my glass. I've tried with other smeltable materials and it still didn't work. Did I do something wrong? Or is this a major problem that needs fixing?
