[MCPE-45] Animals not respawning

I killed some animals for food but now none have spawned again

I gave up keeping animals as they seemed to disappear from the fenced area...not escaped but just disappeared. I have not tested this on the 0.4.0 release so this may be fixed already. Do they just grow old and die?

You just have to kill all animals on the map then they will respawn. There is a hard limit of animals on the map. If there are only 2-4 left, they will respawn. I don't know anything about despawning.
