Leaf blocks replace half slabs

I planted a sapling two blocks away from a short wall topped off with stone brick half slabs and when the tree finally grew, the half slabs disappeared and were replaced with the leaf blocks from the newly grown tree. I'm using a Motorola Xoom Family Edition Android Tablet on Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4
