Nether Portals can send players to the wrong places

With the new update, nether portals appear to be sending players to the wrong location. Upon installing the update, my character loaded into the nether where I last was. I proceeded to go through an portal back to the overworld which then suffocated me during the loading screen. My friend, who was on the other side of the portal, did not see me or my items at all during this period. After respawning, I again attempted travel through the nether. My overworld portal send me to nearly identical coordinates in the nether, far away from anywhere we've explored. The attached gif shows this happening.
