I was at y-level 150 and jumped up on a chest 1 block higher than I was at and my y-level stayed at 150
It is because the chest is smaller than a normal block by a couple of pixels. Technically, you were still on y 150, but the most accurate would be, like y 150.8 . However, Minecraft cuts off the decimals. So your co-ords showed 150.
