Held block darkens when next to a torch

This may or may not be a bug, but when i go up next to antorch mounted at my head height, the block i am holding goes dark, the texture are visible but just darkened. I have attaced 2 screen shots, in the first one i am near a torch and all is normal, in the second one i am right next to a torch and the brick block i am holding has darkened
