So, I don't want to ask to remove falling out of the world as I know it will take a lot of effort, but I just want it so that if it happens in the overworld, and is completely out of your control, you don't lose your items.

Bobby Wilson, If you fall into the void, you lose all your stuff. If you fall into the void in the end, nether, or overworld, you lose all you stuff. It's like dying in lava. Also, If they add that, it would be like keep inventory in cheats, and you could easily take advantage of that and everytime you want to go your spawn, you could just jump in the void and get home.
