Even when looking through the simplified crafting system that shows all of the crafting recipies for you, it does not show any recipe for smooth sandstone yet the recipies for smooth sandstone slabs and stairs were avaliable (though of course you can't craft them because there's no smooth sandstone). This was found while playing survival.
