Chickens were bred in a pen less than 20x20 and disappear when I leave the area and return. Has happened both when I travel a distance away or to the Nether through a nearby portal. Does not happen to bred cows; I have no other animals being bred. Only started happening today, have been playing for a couple of weeks without this happening.

Get real. They're chattel, not pets. They don't need names, they just stay in the pen til I need arrows. This is a new problem.

If you haven't already, you might like to make use of the search feature to see if the issue has already been mentioned.
Per MCPE-21416 the unexpected despawning is usually occurring on chunk borders, so if you make your pen entirely inside a single chunk you might be able to prevent bred chickens from despawning.

They're probably despawning. Try naming them.
