It happens randomly. I have the same issue too.

I got crackling, but it only happens when I start the game with my headphones plugged in. Starting it up on my speakers and then plugging the headphones in afterwards works normally. Hope that's helpful for you, or maybe it's a completely different bug.
I have edited Device Settings and get no sound. 1 out of 4 times i start the game i get sounds, Can this bug please be fixed _
I get a weird crackling sound that overpowers all other sound on my PC (I like to play with itunes playing music) issue goes away when I close the game after making a weird loud popping sound.
@MissMarzenia try windows 10 home fresh install and please reopen as it is 100% reproducible.
Have the same problem.
Still no sound, i had Windows Media Player already installed (because my laptop was once a Win8.1)
So i tried to reinstall but still didn't work.

The actual fix to this is to install the Media Feature Pack which is not bundled with Windows N/KN installations.
Go to:
Settings > Apps > Optional Features > Add Feature > Media Feature Pack
Restart your PC and sound should start working.
I tried everything and the issue still persists. I even followed the instructions given by the helpers on a different forum. I re-downloaded, restarted my pc, updated my drivers and nothing worked.
Same issue here.. i reinstalled the game twice.. nothing happens.
You will need to edit your audio device settings.
-Right click volume icon.
-Select playback devices.
-Right click the audio device that shows with green check mark.
-Select properties.
-Click advanced tab.
-Default format should be the highest sound quality. For example 32 bit, 192000 Hz (Studio Quality).
