When a player is using the book and quill in a realm if the realm goes down or gets updated the user continues to be able to type in the book and quill with no indication that they have been disconnected. All appears normal until you close the book and quill when it then promptly kicks you from the game.
This means that anything typed in the book while the player thinks they are still connected is completely lost and unrecoverable.
