Realms split screen not working (the other player will load for a second then bug out/not add to game)

This could be related to the new update I saw others struggled with this a few months ago. Basically we have two switch users connected to switch online accounts so there’s no problems with that but when on realms and trying to split screen it doesn’t work. It allows you to attempt to add a second player in split screen but once you do it attempts to load them in for a second or two and then just reverts back to one player. No error message or anything just doesn’t add them. Pretty frustrating not sure what to do.
