So I was just playing in my friends realm alone. Everything was still fine, but after I visited the nether and came back for a few minutes, I suddenly lost an hour of progress. No crashes/kicks/warnings from Mojang server. Realm went back to what it was about 1 hour ago just right after I return to the overworld.
