If my realm is closed shouldn't it stop paying? Also I figured out I was paying for a 10 player realm for like a year is there anyway to get a refund?

Using "Close Realm" just takes it offline for maintenance (like if you want to replace the world, add a resource pack, etc). You would need to cancel your subscription to stop automatic payments, if any.
For a refund you would need to contact Mojang Customer Support
