"Close" means close the window, in this case. The background processes are supposed to be there, but they shouldn't hog CPU. A fix for that will be included in the next beta.

Please specify the java executable from openjdk 8 (it should be/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java) for the versions that crash, and see if that helps.
You can specify this if you edit the installation in the launcher and click "More options"
Please try the following:
Install java-1_8_0-openjdk (this can be done by running zypper install java-1_8_0-openjdk)
Click "Installations" in the launcher
Click an installation in the list
Click more options
Specify "/usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0/jre/bin/java" as the java executable to use
Save and try to play
Thanks for your bug report! I could reproduce it, and it seems to happen when using openjre-11. Please try the following:
1. Locate the instance you want to run in the installations tab, and click on it.
2. Click "More options"
3. Write
/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/bin/java
in the "Java executable text" field.
4. Save and click play
