With the spawner eggs the overlay color will be the same as the spots on the egg. For example a creeper egg gives black, a magma cube gives yellow overlay.

I have the problem too. It happens when i have a potion in my hotbar. I have an nVidia GTX560Ti, with latest driver.
Edit: The combination and order of items in the hotbar affects the bug. The easiest way to reproduce it is to have ONLY a potion in the hotbar.
Edit2: I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit.
