This is happening to me still in 1.7.4. It doesn't just drop my frames, it just totally can freeze my client.

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T @ 3.30Ghz
Radeon HD 6850 @ default clock speeds (CCC ver beta 13.11v9.5)
8GB DDR3 @ 1333Mhz
120GB Intel SSD
Java 1.7.0_45 64-bit
