It is still definitely affecting my world on the latest Switch version. It is a permanent issue - once it has happened it cannot be recovered from and even affects Creative Mode. 

I can confirm that this is still an issue for me on the Switch with 1.17.11. I am not the original reporter but experienced exactly the same thing. 

Can confirm that this is the same situation on the Nintendo Switch. 

I can confirm that this is an issue on the Nintendo Switch too and has existed since pre-1.17. It is still an issue in 1.17.2. Only copies of the original map can be held in the offhand, all new maps (other than Buried Treasure Maps) are blank and cannot be held either like any normal item or in the offhand 'shield' slot. This applies to Empty Maps and Empty Locator Maps whether made with a crafting table or a map table.
