Just happened to me to die in 1.17.1 while landing unlucky on vines on top of a jungle tree.
The message received was "X fell off some vines"
I had no speed to die if I would land on a normal block. But unluckily the edge of the block had a vine where I landed and I instantly died.
I believe the issue the other people had was vine related as well and caused the weird gliding to death.
