I have experienced having my villagers and other mobs despawn for nearly a year, I first commented on this back in January however it is still occurring. I cannot level up a villager because they usually despawn before I can max them out and even if I do they still disappear. I was told to avoid chunk borders but irregardless of where they are they still despawn. I have read that mobs must be interacted with, but I have had leveled up villagers simply disappear.

They are not drowning in the well, they aren't falling in a canyon, they are not being killed by zombies or pillagers. Just disappearing. I tested this by building a small village of 7 villagers I left for a moment and came back within less then 30 seconds I had already lost 1, within 5 minutes only 2 were left. A day later all were gone.

I cannot build a lasting village, I cannot farm animals,  simply put I cannot play the game. As I saw a previous comment state, please fix this as my favorite game has more or less come to an end. The older version had tight population limits but at least you knew your villagers would be there when you came back from mining or cutting some trees.

My villagers have also been disappearing. Recently 2 weapon Smith's, 2 farmers, and 2 archers disappeared. Village is walled and well lit, it is level with no canyons, or lava. There are no portals nearby. I left to mine and when I returned they were gone. This has been happening in multiple worlds, in peaceful, survival, and creative modes. 

When I return remaining villagers begin reproducing, but usually those new villagers will be unemployed and will also disappear in time.
