The controls now leave gaps and there is not a smooth transition between directions anymore. When going from Forward to Forward-Left or Forward-Right, and then down to Left or Right, you will stop moving if your finger lands in one of the gaps so you have to lift your finger every time. Continuous movement is too difficult.
The positioning and size of the new controls are too different for players. You cannot mimic the old d-pad size and position from before the update, so players cannot try to preserve muscle memory by customizing the controls to be the same as before. For my specific phone, to be in the same position as before the d-pad is too small for use. To be the same size the d-pad is shifted up. I provided screenshots of the old position from my phone and then the position of the attempted new one.

After customizing the jump buttons size and position, when in flight mode the up and down buttons do not save with the new position. They are significantly smaller and shifted. They appear like they are just stuck as default.
