When trying to convert an item to a block, the crafting table doesn't allow it. Nor does it work when you try to convert it on your own when you place the item in the crafting table slots. Example: Coal to a Coal block(doesn't register), iron ingot to a iron block(doesn't register), bone meal to bone block (doesn't register).
