I died, immediately went back to get my items and they were gone

While I was mining I died, so right after I respawned I started running back to where I was when I died, and I couldn’t have been gone for more than three  or four minutes before getting back to where I died but all my stuff was gone. I know about items despawning, but usually I’d have more time to collect my stuff. I don’t know if it was because I was out of range or something else, but I had quite a few important items in my inventory and I’m really sad that that happened. Please fix this (or change this if isn’t a bug since it is a bit annoying).
