Upon death by falling from a high place; my items will be on the ground near where I died but only some of the items are actually able to be picked up off the ground. About half of my items are floating above ground and will react as if they are actually in this location but can't be picked up. I can lower them father into the ground by removing blocks; I can raise them above ground by adding blocks; I can shift them by placing water from a bucket but I can't pick them up.
This has occurred twice in a row when dying by falling from a high place but the third time I tried recreating the situation everything was able to be picked up normally.
Update: Died by skeletons at a spawner and two of my pickaxes and three stacks of blocks are doing the same bug. My inventory still has a full 9 slots available but I just can't pick some items up.
I am the host with one other player who has joined me.

Playing on an Xbox One X. This is happening to my son often, and it's not always when he falls from a high place.
In one example, he was killed by a zombie on land, and his items were distributed across grassy dirt blocks. When he respawned and returned, he could walk through his items but not pick them up. I joined the game as player 2 and I also could not pick them up. He was able to move the items by pouring water and pick up some of them but not all of them. Plenty of space in inventory.
In another example, he did fall from a high place and died on a border between land and water. His items were floating in the water. Neither he nor I (as player 2) could pick up the items, and we kept swimming through them until they despawned. He watched a bunch of diamond level-3-enchanted items disappear that he worked very hard on; this was pretty rough on him.
There are other incidents where this happened.
Please raise the priority on this issue. It really needs to be fixed.

If possible, when experiencing this issue do save the world immediately and upload a copy here, or upload to a file-sharing site and post the link. This may be useful especially if the items can be seen on the ground/floating but not collectable.
Also, this issue seems to have arisen around 1.16.200, if we look at the trend of "lost/uncollectable items upon death"-type reports over time. Earlier reports may have been due to other causes.

Earlier reports of items disappearing after death were linked to MCPE-48370, which was supposed to be fixed by changes to fall damage and item drop handling in 1.16.100.
That fix has apparently caused ongoing issues with client-server disagreement about the player’s position and falling state reported at MCPE-105490, MCPE-109937, MCPE-120140, MCPE-120277, and MCPE-122780. This report seems to describe client-server disagreement about the position of dropped items.

one fix is going far away so the chunks are not loaded then coming back
or dying again or making a zombie get them or a fox
sometimes none of these work though
and the only way to get them back is to close minecraft and hope it did not save the death

The only thing to take the item back is using hopper under the item

Don't know why this occurs, but I would suggest hopping into creative mode, digging a couple blocks down, placing a hopper connected to a chest, then using water to get your items into the hopper to at least get them back.

It helped when I quit and re-joined the game. Then I could pick my stuff up. Try that next time it happens. Btw, I'm on Windows-10 so it could possibly not work on your platform.

I tried battling an enderman and lost, and then returned to the spot after my respawn and nothing was there. I was mad as I lost my best stuff. Playing on Windows PC Java Edition. I could swear a zombie was using one of my old stone swords after I got back down there a few minecraft-days later.

Douglas Manson: this is a Bedrock edition report. Please look for Java Edition report for your issue.

Same on iOS
Except the fact that the hit box is on the ground
How ever it looks like it is floating

Same here on iPadOS, I even tried using hoppers to see if they would be collected, but they were not. So I saw my stacks of red dust and quartz disappear without being able to help it.

" I can lower them father into the ground by removing blocks" if thats the case this isnt the same issue the new hotfix added to realms. everything in the chunks around the players just stops, you cant pick up loot or can kill, move or damage mobs.

Yes the same thing happened to me, a creeper blew up two of my chests and then when I went to go pick up the items with a completely empty inventory I just walked right though them and then they despawed after I passed through them. I lost a bunch of food and all of my diamond weapons.

This happened to me on my survival world. I tryed doing the exact same thing I did at first to die, and the items that fell in water can't be picked up unless you exit and enter the world again. The world was with a simulation distance of 8, if that helps
Here's the world: test.mcworld
Here's a video showing what to do in order to reproduce the bug on this world (teleport to the coordinates and set the spawnpoint on the house if you don't appear at the same place as the video):

For me in 1.18.2, I died from an iron golem and half stuff disappeared when I died. I had joined a friend.

Once experienced my items floating quite high up; relogging put them back on the ground again. I agree with GoldenHelmet's theory of client-side agreement, since my items were quite high up and I was going at a high velocity when I died.

Hi, my ticket was procesed as duplicate of this. And this ticket has a year created, I do not understand if we are having a solution on the missing items and the effort or I just lost my items on a bug?

Pretty much @Endomusik. I recommend that if you died near trees you search high and low for your stuff. Relogging as the previous user mentioned is also a possibility.
I believe the main issue is that the client side of the game vs the server side of the game actually relays two different positions for the items in question. You just gotta get lucky and find the server side positioning. I sincerely doubt they will ever put out a viable fix that will permanently patch this bug.

Had my equipped armor and shield disappear when I died by hitting a wall while flying with elytra in a completely isolated tunnel on a realm. The rest of my inventory was there in a suspciously neat pile on the floor, not spread out like usual when one dies. The armor and shield that I had equipped however just disappeared for some reason. I checked around everywhere and there was no way the gear could have gotten destroyed or stolen, since there was nothing around the tunnel other than solid blocks and nobody else was online.
On the 1.19.11 Hotfix

Just had this happen again. I fell ~50 blocks and had a few of my tools disappear. Most everything was there just a few items missing

If you have a copy of the world available, you might like to upload a copy of it for investigation.
On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature.
On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds
On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS. (Please do not purchase a Realms subscription just to provide a world to us - but if you have a Realm already this may be a viable option if you wish to do so.)
If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.

Having same issue in 1.20.50.22 Beta

I have the same issue and it also happened in multiplayer but i could only pick a few of my items, i found by walking around aimlessly in the area of death you pick up invisible items that are the ones you can't pick up and i my items were completely floating and were ghosts, and my friend could see where my items actually dropped, but not me. The floating items disappeared after we picked them up one by one.

Affects 1.20.51 hotfix and 1.20.70.20 preview

I've had a similar issue happen to me recently - when I flew into a corner with an elytra and died, my worn items glitched into the wall. I have been able to reliably reproduce the effect.

Throwing in my $0.02 here:
I've had two instances where this happened (one in 1.20.6; the second in 1.21.0), both while flying with an Elytra and dying due to kinetic energy.
I hit a cliff face: 100% of my inventory just disappeared.
I hit a tree: most of my inventory survived except a few things that were actively equipped (sword, elytra, leggings, etc.); those few things instantaneously disappeared.
My thoughts are that when the items are being scattered in the environment, some are being placed into occupied blocks, which results in instantaneous despawn. For the cliff incident, that just happened to be ALL of my inventory; for the tree incident, it seems to be just what was actively equipped in my inventory that happened to be allocated to an already occupied block (either log or leaves).

I have had this bug happen to me twice in the last week. Only elytra and armor are affected, both times I found everything else in my inventory. In the first case, I can confidently say there was no chance I could’ve died inside the block and had items “elevator” up. This death occurred in mid-air with a floating block. No where for items to hide. Again, exactly the same items disappeared both times. Armor and wings.

This just happened to me, I flew into a wall and all of my equipped armour and my elytra disappeared instantly. It was a small enclosed space and everything else in my inventory was simply on the ground. I mined out the walls to see if my armour had somehow clipped into them, but it was not there. My chest plate, which I was not wearing, did not disappear. Additionally I do not think the disappearing armour and the stuff unable to be picked up from the ground should be categorized as the same bug. They do not seem to have the same effect or the same cause.
