Died and none of my things are where I died.

I was building a platform and fell from a high place in the Nether and I went back to my base to get the recovery compass so that I could find my way to where I died and none of my things were there as well as the pieces of ladder I had placed to try and not die from falling from the high place I made. went back and nothing is there.
