my friend places down a shulker box at the end spawn point, I go through the portal and the block disappears. The shulker box and it's contents are nowhere.

As Matt mentioned, the obsidian platform is cleared when you travel to the end.
This is common across both versions.
This is works as intended. Don't put anything down on the obsidian platform.
