[MC-108164] Game crashes when using a furnace

What I expected to happen was...:
placing an item in a furnace to smelt it.

*sidenote: the map has been changed from various versions. Normally, chunks are generated and previous fragments of the map are eliminated but it has never crashed when using a furnace as it is normally used.

What actually happened was...:
the game crashed a third time when an item was placed in the slot to smelt it.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. get a furnace
2. place an item in either slot of the furnace

Environment

OS: Windows 10 (ver 10.0, arch amd64)
Java: 1.8.0_25 (by Oracle Corporation)
Launcher: Minecraft Launcher 1.6.61 (bootstrap 100)
Minecraft: 16w39a (updated Wed Sep 28 08:33:50 CDT 2016)

Your version of Minecraft is no longer supported. We are currently only accepting bugs found in the official release 1.10.2 or latest snapshot 16w39c. This issue has already been fixed.
