Tamed wolf dies of fire damage while in a boat at the surface and I was at lava level

I left my dog in a boat at sea level (y=92 – I use custom world preset). When I got close to lava, I heard it take damage. It eventually said (in the chat) "Wolf went up in flames"

On the picture, my head was at the selected block's height, my feet on the iron ore.
