Client crash when opening inventory

Put the summary of the bug you're having here

What I expected to happen was...:
pressing E to open my in-game inventory

What actually happened was...:
client crashed and did not allow a bug report to be generated

Steps to Reproduce:
1. downloaded a clean version of Minecraft. no mods, no upgrades
2. started game, and created a new map
3. game loaded, noticed chunks generated very slowly, but did load completely
4. upon pressing E key to open inventory in creative mode, the game crashed and brought me back to the main minecraft launcher screen

Previously would crash and tell me that Java Binary SE has stopped working.

This computer used to play minecraft perfectly (modded or otherwise) but I had to factory restore the machine. After resetting the laptop to factory settings, the game would no longer play. I have removed and redownloaded minecraft and java several times hoping the issue would fix itself but still getting no results
