The bug
Clicking the new recipe book crashes the game immediately. Doesn't make a difference if I have ingredients and recipes logged or not. Also, my regular 2x2 crafting table doesn't work at all.
I tried removing any mods, even though I was using a vanilla profile. I disabled all texture packs as none of them are ready for 1.12. I even deleted and re-downloaded Minecraft.

Turning on and off that gamerule had no effect. Also, java and my drivers are all up-to-date. The game still crashes upon clicking the book.
Could you please provide a video showing everything you do until the crash, maybe you are missing something and if not it could make it easier to correctly do what you were doing.

Here is a video of me launching the game in Version 1.12, creating a new world, collecting wood, hitting the inventory button clicking the recipe book and crash. this also occurs if I attempt to click the book on a crafting bench. I also show the 2x2 grid not allowing me to make wood planks. Again, this is a clean installation of vanilla Minecraft. no mods, not even resource packs. I un-installed and deleted all of the Minecraft files and re-installed it.
Update to this issue. I am on a realm server. Clicking the book in the realm still crashes my game, however, unlike in a single player world, both the crafting bench and my 2x2 crafting table work correctly. I'm not sure if that's relevant, but it might be a clue to where the problem might be.
I have added a screenshot of the game output after trying to launch. It shows a pretty big error with the recipe files. I think that's the problem I just don't know how to fix it.
Cannot reproduce this. Do you have the gamerule
doLimitedCrafting
set?
