Dogs are called wolves in death messages while cats are called cats

If a dog (aka tamed wolf) dies, the owner recieves a death message with the name "Wolf". However, if a cat (aka tamed ocelot) dies, the owner recieves a death message with the name "Cat".

This is inconsistent behaviour as I would expect that both tamed animals would be either considered another animal than the untamed one or the same animal as the untamed one since they both change their texture when being tamed.

There are no dogs in Minecraft, only wolves. If you tame a wolf, it becomes a tamed wolf. Simple as that; works as intended.

Yet ocelot becomes cat; leaving open.

The ocelot officially becomes a cat. New name, new skin colour, etc. The wolf stays a wolf, a tamed one.

Tamed wolf has a different skin too (just less obvious), and the name is the issue here.
As for "officially becomes a cat" not true, it's still an ocelot entity.

The texture also says wolf_tame.png and not dog.png. Nevertheless, we're gonna have to wait and see if Mojang really screwed up twice, or simply intended the tamed wolf to be a tamed wolf, as basically every english community calls it.

Can confirm for MC 1.12.1.

The reasoning of this ticket is no longer valid as ocelots and cats are different entities now.
