Sticky pistons destroy their head when retracted (displays particles and plays sound)

If you retract a sticky piston that has no block attached to it destroys the head but while doing so also plays the block breaking sound and displays particles. This does not happen with normal pistons or with sticky pistons that have a block attached to them.
