Server crashes unless a player near spawn joins first

The server crashes with either seg fault, or bus error when a player far from spawn is the first to join after a server restart. If I join a player at spawn first, it seems fine. This is reproducible every time the server is restarted.

Vanilla server. No bukkit or other modifications. Appears to affect 1.5.0 release, 13w11a snapshot, and the 1.5.1 prerelease.

Please attach the crash report, otherwise this ticket is incomplete.

Your Java is severely outdated, please update.
Segfault or bus error are no crashes of Minecraft server, it's a crash of the JVM.

Thanks. I was about to ask if the minimum java requirements are listed anywhere. Previous releases have been fine under 6.

I've upgraded to oracle/sun 1.7.0_17 and things have been stable for a few hours.

I failed to mention this in the original report, but CPU utilization is also very high in this release and continues to be so under 1.7.0_17. I see 40-50% CPU on one 3Ghz i7 950 core with 2 players, and 100% for three or more. At some point (usually a few hours play) block breaking lag is very bad, does not recover even when players leave, and I'm forced to restart the minecraft server.

I will attach crash dumps if the seg faults continue.

It is supported, but that's not to say some versions of 6 won't cause issues. If possible you should at least update to the most recent version of 6. Note though (especially since you are using linux) you can easily have multiple versions of java installed on your system.

Software Requirements:

  • Java (Java SE 6 Update 32 ... or newer is preferred)

You have Java 6U26, current version is 6U43, thus "severly outdated".
Support and Updates for Java 6 ceased in Feb. 2013
