Barrier stay invisible while you're holding the barrier item.
Normally, while holding a barrier the blocks texture becomes visible.

Windows 10 64-bit, java version 8 update 161, Intel i7-4510u, 8GB-ram

Does this still happen if you disable all resource packs and restart the game?

Yes, it does still happen.

Do you have particles enabled in your video settings?

Particles where set to minimum.
All particles and decreased particles work.
